What is Roller Derby? How is it played?
Roller derby is an intense, fast-paced, full contact aggressive sport that is not for the faint of heart but is dedicated to the empowerment and fitness of women.
There are three positions on each team: Jammer, Pivot, and Blocker
- The jammer races thru the pack and scores points by passing members of the opposing team.
- The pivot sets the pace of the pack and blocks the opposing team's jammer from breaking thru the pack.
- The blockers assist their team's jammer thru the pack and try to stop the opposing teams jammer from breaking thru the pack.
A pack is composed of eight skaters, four skaters from each team. Specifically, a pack consists of a pivot and three blockers for each team.
Each team has one jammer on the rink at any given time. The jammers line up roughly 20 feet behind the pack.
The first whistle blows and the pack takes off. A second whistle blows and the jammers race to the back of the pack and begin fighting their way through. Once the jammer makes it thru the pack she races around the rink and fights her way thru again. During the second time thru she will score a point for each opposing team member that she passes. The jammers will continue to lap the rink, fight thru the pack, and score points until the end of the jam.
A bout (i.e. game) consists of either: 1) 3 twenty-minute periods or 2) 2 thirty-minute periods. Depends on what the teams decide prior to the start of the bout.
A period consists of numerous "jams". A jam is a 2-minute session with the above activities occurring. After each jam, the 10 girls on the track are replaced by another line up of 10 girls. A jam can be called off in less than 2-minutes if the lead jammer makes that decision; which is done for various strategic reasons.

Are scores and winners staged?
NO! What you see happening at a bout is real! Fights are against the rules and lead to skaters sitting in the penalty box. But if you see a fight at a bout it is real; albeit, it doesn't occur often. Competing teams are our friends off the rink; but we get serious when we are on the rink.

Can all women play? What if I am a bigger girl? What if I am a smaller girl?
All women ages 18 and up can play. We have skaters ranging for 18 to 50; so no you are not too old!
Size doesn't matter. A voluptuous build is harder to push around making for a great blocker. A more slender build is faster making for a great jammer. A shorter girl has a lower center of gravity so she can easily take out bigger girls. Any body build can play any position; it all depends on how bad you want it and how hard your willing to work to get it!

Will I get hurt playing derby?
Anything is possible in life. Roller derby is an intense, fast-paced, full contact aggressive sport that is not for the faint of heart but is dedicated to the empowerment and fitness of women. However, we will teach you to skate properly, fall properly, take and give a "hit" (i.e. block) properly. We do our best to teach safe skating to ensure the safety of our skaters but accidents may happen. Practices teach skating skills and endurance to minimize such accidents.

- 415-285-8833
- 3165 Mission Street Suite #101, San Francisco, CA 94110 (@ Precita)
- They carry skates, pads, and helmets.
Paradise Skate @ Antioch Fairgrounds:

- They carry skates only.
Many sporting good stores, like SportsChalet, will carry the Cobra skates, pads, and helmets. These skates are not as high quality as those at Cruz Skate Shop or either of the skating rinks. Also, a skate boarding shop will carry to proper pads and helmets.

Do I have to know how to skate to join?
No, currently we are accepting all girls regardless of skating ability. Our Coaching Committee will teach you everything you need to know! Anyone can learn to skate but being a derby girl takes dedication to push past our fears and weaknesses. We never apologize and we are strong! We work through our pain, sweat, tears, frustration, and sometime blisters, bruises, and blood together!

Each derby girl is able to pick her own skater name. It's you alter ego and the possibilities are endless. However, all derby girl names are registered with: www.twoevils.org/rollergirls. If the name or something close to it is already registered you must pick something else.
You may not register your own skater name; a team must do it for you. See Skater bi-laws for when we register them.

How do I clean my pads cause they smell?
Every derby girl will sweat, so your pads will smell. For the noses of your team members please clean your pads! To do so, you have a few options.
First, let them air out after every practice. You should wash your pads whenever they start to smell. If you wait to long they will always have that smell to some degree.
Second, to actually wash them pick your favorite method:
